Like its name Edge and Back took a very roundabout, there-and-back journey. After sailing an old Catalina 38 on Lake Erie, I set upon creating a sailing print to commemorate the experience. Back at home I created the leaning yacht you see today and went to work preparing its surroundings. But the composition and colors just didn't capture the excitement, mystique, and adventure I closely embraced within my soul. So I patiently shelved the project knowing it would resurface another day.

That day came 3 months later. The day is not as interesting as the way in which the days creative ramblings produced the final Edge and Back.

It started with the intent to create a piece revolving around a pair of Wayfarer sunglasses, but the project soon lost steam. So I added a face to the lonely spectacles - still nothing [Note: this particular project later gets picked up to become Dancing with The Devil. Man in the moon? No, still not working. But wait. This moon, this moon has possibility, I sad to myself. And just then I remembered my tabled yacht awaiting the stroke of mystique and adventure. What more mystical than a moon? And what more adventurous than a race - a race to the edge and back. Ah, hah! And so Edge and Back was born.

Along the way combinations of ship and moon take me back to my childhood. Back to when my parents used to read me short stories before bed. I recalled the stories of The Owl & The Pussycat and Wynken, Blynken, & Nod, all navigating their vessels across moonlit waters.

That's what's so satisfying about creating. The unpredictable roundabouts. The warm recollections. I hope you find the same enjoyment in viewing that I found in creating.
